This Summit is for you if:
- You believe in a world in which student, professional and former athletes, and their support systems impacted by sports-related concussion HEAD TO SPEECH-language pathologists and audiologists!
- You are interested in increasing strategic partnerships, diverse pipeline initiatives, and practitioner referrals in order for this underserved community to receive education, counseling, timely identification, assessments, and interventions for speech, language, hearing and cognitive-communication disorders.
- You are either a speech-language pathologist, audiologist, certified brain injury specialist, athletic trainer, sports performance coach, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or academic support for athletes interested in obtaining continuing education credits (CEUs) and professional development hours (PDHs).
- You are looking for a way to advocate for the inclusion of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists in Sports Concussion Management within your community!
This Summit is NOT for you if:
- You are not interested in developing or modifying an action plan for interprofessional education and collaborative practices.
- You are not interested in sports or sports concussion management from the perspective of speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
- You are not interested in becoming an ambassador within your personal or professional community.
Create an Action Plan to Implement Head to Speech Programs within your Department and Across your University Campus
This hands-on, 3-DAY HYBRID SUMMIT highlights the University supports and services available to athletes through Speech-Language Pathology and Athletic Programs.
Join in the fun by creating your own Head to Speech Public Service Announcement leading up to the summit. NSSLHA Chapters within the Washington, DC Area are raising awareness through the PSA Challenge during the month of March! March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and March Madness! The winner will be announced at the summit.
On Friday, March 31st, the summit kicks off with a Panda Express Meet and Greet Fundraiser! All of the proceeds support NSSLHA in being able to implement Head to Speech programs within their Speech-Language Pathology Programs, as well as provide brain workouts and concussion recovery and self-care packages to their athletic community!
On Saturday, April 1st, the ALL-DAY summit will address the common goals of communication sciences and disorders and athletic departments when working directly with student-athletes who are at risk of or have a history of post-concussion speech, language, hearing, and cognitive-communication disorders.
Both departments will be able to learn what interprofessional education and collaborative practices are, why these practices are important and mutually beneficial, how to identify key roles and responsibilities, how to discover the overlaps and gaps in resources, what innovative initiatives each department can contribute, how to develop, implement and evaluate the process for continued success.
On Sunday, April 2nd, Speech-Language Pathologists, graduate student clinicians, and sports performance coaches will lead the athletic, health, wellness, and fitness community through a Brain Workout-a-Thon! Learn how to integrate therapeutic cognitive-communication tasks, mindfulness, and brain healthy foods into your warm ups, sports drills, fitness exercises, and daily routines.
The event is free for invited athletes and NSSLHA students! All proceeds from the community workout provide athletes and their support systems with brain health classes, support group and Concussion Recovery and Self-Care Packages!
